Declaración
del Comité Nacional para la Liberación de los Cinco Cubanos en su
decimo quinto aniversario de su injusto encarcelamiento en los Estados
Unidos

Hace
quince años, el 12 de septiembre de 1998, el FBI allanó las casas de
los cinco cubanos que vivían en Miami, Gerardo Hernández, Ramón
Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González y René González, y les
acusó de cargos inventados de conspiración para cometer espionaje y
cargos relacionados. El gobierno de EE.UU. sabía que los Cinco estaban
en Estados Unidos haciendo seguimiento a las acciones de las
organizaciones con sede en Miami y que son apoyadas por Estados Unidos.
Estas organizaciones de terroristas cubanos exiliados operan impunemente
contra el pueblo de Cuba. El gobierno estaba plenamente consciente de
que los hombres no tenían armas y que nunca habían hecho daño a ninguna
persona. Los ataques terroristas contra Cuba han matado a 3.478 personas
e herido a 2.099 debido a los atentados realizados por estos grupos
paramilitares en Miami. Pero en lugar de arrestar a los perpetradores de
la violencia, el gobierno de EE.UU. arrestó y procesó a los Cinco
Cubanos, en un tribunal de Miami, donde era imposible que los Cinco
puedan defenderse adecuadamente contra la virulenta atmósfera anti-Cuba
de esa ciudad.
El FBI amenazó a
los Cinco con cadena perpetua si no "cooperasen" y se volvieran unos
contra otros. Olga Salvanueva, esposa de René González, fue deportada
antes del juicio porque René se negó a ceder a la presión de EE.UU.
Hasta
el día de hoy, a Gerardo Hernández se le ha negado la compañía de su
esposa Adriana Pérez, ya que Washington le ha negado el derecho a
visitar Gerardo en estos últimos 15 largos años.
A
pesar de la increíble crueldad de la prisión y de los funcionarios
estadounidenses, los Cinco han permanecido fuertes y han mantenido su
posición de principio del derecho a defender a su pueblo de la violencia
terrorista.
Estuvieron en
total aislamiento durante 17 meses en detención antes del juicio en
Miami. El reporte inflamatorio y muy perjudicial por los medios de Miami
ayudó a condenar a los Cinco, incluso antes de la conclusión del
juicio.
Después de su condena
el 8 de junio de 2001, sobre todos los cargos, los Cinco emitieron una
declaración valiente "al pueblo estadounidense." De fecha 17 de junio de
2001, que dice en parte:
"Nunca hicimos nada por dinero y siempre vivimos modesta y humildemente, a la altura del sacrificio que realiza nuestro pueblo.
"Nos
guió un fuerte sentimiento de solidaridad humana, amor a nuestra patria
y desprecio por todo lo que no respete la dignidad del hombre.
"Nos
acusados en esta causa no nos arrepentimos de lo que hemos realizado
para defender a nuestro país. Nos declaramos totalmente inocentes. Nos
reconforta el deber cumplido con nuestro pueblo y nuestra patria.
"Nuestras
familias comprenden el alcance de las ideas que nos han guiado y
sentirán orgullo por esta entrega a la humanidad en la lucha contra el
terrorismo y por la independencia de Cuba." De
Clinton a Bush a Obama, las administraciones estadounidenses han
mantenido a los cinco cubanos encarcelados. Pero un movimiento enérgico
de partidarios ha surgido en los Estados Unidos y en todo el mundo para
exigir la libertad de Gerardo, Ramón, Antonio, Fernando y René.
El
Jueves, 12 de septiembre 2013, a través de la isla de Cuba se adornó
con cintas amarillas todos los espacios públicos, como una muestra de
amor y compromiso con sus Cinco Héroes, hasta que regresen. Le invitamos
a ponerse también una cinta amarilla en su nombre.
El Comité Nacional por la Liberación de los Cinco Cubanos en los Estados Unidos fue la primera organización que se formó en apoyo a los Cinco, a finales de junio de 2001. Nos hemos dedicado a la lucha por la libertad de los Cinco hasta que cada hermano regrese a casa con su amada familia y su pueblo.
Desde hace más de 12 años, se han organizado cientos de foros,
protestas y numerosos eventos en los medios de comunicación para romper
el cerco mediático en EE.UU. sobre el caso de los Cinco. Durante casi
cinco años hemos llevado un gran esfuerzo de investigación para
descubrir y documentar la cobertura durante el juicio de los Cinco por
los periodistas de Miami que recibieron fondos del gobierno
estadounidense. Sus informes a los medios fueron muy perjudiciales para
los Cinco. Nuestro trabajo se ha convertido en un foco importante de los
cinco recursos de hábeas corpus.
En última instancia, es el movimiento popular y la movilización de los esfuerzos que liberarán a los héroes cubanos.
Cada día de su detención es un abuso intolerable y aquellos de nosotros
que estamos libres para organizarnos débenos pensar en más acciones en
su nombre.
Nuestro
tema en el Comité Nacional siempre ha sido "cuando el pueblo de los
EE.UU. se entere de la misión antiterrorista cubana de los Cinco y su
sacrificio, exigirá su libertad." Hemos sido testigos de
innumerables acciones de esa premisa. Casi universalmente, la respuesta
de la persona promedio que escucha de los Cinco ha sido, en primer
lugar, un gran descontento por el injusto castigo que han sufrido, y el
apoyo a su libertad.

The Cuban Five Wrongly accused. Unjustly convicted. 15 Years in U.S. prisons.

Fifteen
years ago, on Sept. 12, 1998, the FBI raided the homes of five Cuban
men living in Miami, Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio
Guerrero, Fernando González and René González, and indicted them on
trumped-up charges of espionage conspiracy and related charges. The U.S.
government knew that the Five were in the United States monitoring the
actions of Miami-based, U.S.-backed terrorist Cuban exile organizations
that operate with impunity against the people of Cuba. It was fully
aware that the men had no weapons and had never harmed any individual.
Terrorist
attacks against Cuba have killed 3,478 people and injured 2,099 due to
the plots carried out by these paramilitary Miami groups. But instead of
arresting the perpetrators of that violence, the U.S. government
arrested and prosecuted the Cuban Five, trying them in a Miami court
where it was impossible for the Five to properly defend themselves
against the virulent anti-Cuba atmosphere of that city.
The
FBI threatened the Five with lifetime imprisonment if they did not
"cooperate" and turn against each other. René González's wife Olga
Salanueva was deported before the trial because René refused to give in
to U.S. pressure.
To
this day, Gerardo Hernández has been denied his wife Adriana Pérez's
companionship, as Washington has refused her the right to visit Gerardo
for these 15 long years.
Despite
the incredible cruelty by the prison and U.S. officials, the Five have
stayed strong and maintained their principled stance of the right to
defend their people from terrorist violence.
They
were held in complete isolation for 17 months in Miami detention before
trial. The inflammatory and highly prejudicial reporting by the Miami
media helped condemn the Five even before the trial's conclusion.
After
their conviction on June 8, 2001 on all counts, the Five issued a
valiant statement "To the American people." Dated June 17, 2001, it
reads in part:
"We
have never done anything for money. We have always lived modestly and
acted humbly, living up to the sacrifices of our own people.
"We
have always been moved by a strong sentiment of human solidarity, love
for our homeland and contempt for that which goes against the dignity of
the human being.
"The
defendants in this trial are in no way repentant of what we have done
to defend our country. We declare ourselves innocent and simply take
comfort in the fact that we have honored our duty to our people and our
homeland.
"Our
loved ones understand the depth of the ideas that guide us and they
will take pride in our sacrifices for Humanity in this struggle against
terrorism and for the independence of Cuba." From
Clinton to Bush to Obama, U.S. administrations have kept the Cuban Five
imprisoned. But a spirited movement of supporters has arisen in the
United States and worldwide, demanding the freedom of Gerardo, Ramón,
Antonio, Fernando and René.
On
Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, throughout the island of Cuba yellow ribbons
will festoon every public space, as a show of love and commitment to
their Five Heroes, until they return. We invite you to also don a yellow
ribbon on their behalf.
The National Committee to Free the Cuban Five in the United States was the first organization to form in support of the Five, in late June 2001. We have dedicated ourselves to fighting for the Five's freedom until each brother is home with his beloved family and people.
For more than 12 years, we have organized hundreds of forums, protests
and held numerous media events to break through the U.S. media blockade
of the Five's case. For almost five years we have led an extensive
research effort to uncover and document the coverage during the Five's
trial by Miami reporters who received U.S. government monies. Their
media reports were highly prejudicial to the Five. Our work has become a
major focus of the Five's Habeas Corpus appeals.
Ultimately, it is the people's movement and mobilizing efforts that will free the Cuban heroes.
Each day of their imprisonment is an intolerable abuse and those of us
who are free to organize must think of more actions on their behalf.
Our
theme in the National Committee has always been, "when the people of
the U.S. learn of the Cuban Five's anti-terrorist mission and their
sacrifice, they will demand their freedom." We have been
witness in countless actions of that premise. Almost universally, the
response of the average person who hears of the Cuban Five has been,
first, shock at the unjust punishment they have endured, and then
support for their freedom.
